A DEEPER DARKNESS

Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968)

(I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Jessica Dovey on Facebook.)

“Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: ony love can do that.” Martin Luther King, Jr.

The focus of "The BeZine," a publication of The Bardo Group Beguines, is on sacred space (common ground) as it is expressed through the arts. Our work covers a range of topics: spirituality, life, death, personal experience, culture, current events, history, art, and photography and film. We share work here that is representative of universal human values however differently they might be expressed in our varied religions and cultures. We feel that our art and our Internet-facilitated social connection offer a means to see one another in our simple humanity, as brothers and sisters, and not as “other.” This is a space where we hope you’ll delight in learning how much you have in common with “other” peoples. We hope that your visits here will help you to love (respect) not fear. For more see our Info/Mission Statement Page.

  1. Thank you so much for this! My friend Jan Passion, from the Non-violent Peace Force, sent me the following quote from Dr. King below as a reminder of the broader planetary issues that are involved in the spiral of violence we seem to be caught in:

“The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, volence merely increases hate… Returning violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkenss to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: Only love can do that.”

  2. I’ve been seeing news articles all day on the fact that the quote that you used here by Martin Luther King was actually never said by him. What do you think?

    1. I had it in one of my notebooks and then got the first line from another blogger friend. I thought I must have left it out in my notes. I’ve just double checked. The last sentences are from King’s book Strength to Love. Apparently the first sentence has come down from a Facebook user who added her own thoughts to those of Dr King. She allegedly set his words off in quotes, but as it filtered through the Internet they were lost. I’m correcting this post.

      Thanks, Gayle! Virtual hugs! 🙂

      1. I’m glad you came to the same conclusion I had. I’m a stickler for accurate information being disseminated–if I can help it.

        An admirable post.

        Hugs for you, Jamie! 🙂
