super lotto…

super lotto

with hesitating steps
i entered
aunt bea’s home
after weeks
of speculation
and
unwarranted certainty
i had to admit
to her
that i had failed
in my endeavor
but
she smiled
and
said
a dream
isn’t
a lottery ticket
to be drawn
on some
certain date
to declare
the winner
a dream
is a promise
that one makes
to self
to be sought
and
kept

as i walked up
the steps
to aunt bea’s
i heard
her
gasping
and
saying
oh
my
goodness
i hurried in
and
found her
staring
at the tv
she said
she’d been watching
this sci-fi movie
where
a woman
had given birth
to a creature
that wreak havoc
on her
and
every
helpless soul
in her world
even though
she’d
given it
the gift
of life

the quilt…

the quilt

today
was quite warm
so i
was wondering
as i approached
the front porch
why aunt bea
was sitting
with a quilt
on her lap
then i noticed
she was mending it
and
although
i knew better
i still had to ask
why
aunt bea
said
this quilt
was hand sown
by my mother
and
given to me
on the day
i was married
its tight seams
were meant
to last a lifetime
though few do
its
patchwork patterns
of discarded cloth
are like
life’s broken dreams
and
fragmented moments
of joy
and
pain
all woven
into something new
if you look
at each part
separately
there is nothing
special
about them
but
when you
combine them
and
truly see
the full pattern
the beauty of life
and
the reasons for
holding on to it
become
quite clear

was reading
the sunday paper
when i stopped by
she said
i’ve noticed
that
they have
computer apps
for just about
everything
here’s one
that tutors students
it even watches
the student’s face
so it knows
if the student
is getting upset
and
will provide
some
comforting words
of encouragement
guess we can
soon expect
that someone
somewhere
will walk into a confessional
ask for father dave
and hear
dave
dave’s not here
i’m

need i say more…

aunt bea
and i
were sitting
on the front porch
when
a political campaigner
stopped to solicit
our vote
to which
aunt bea replied
lawd
lawd
lawd
you folks
done
lost your mind
promising prosperity
when there ain’t
even enough money
to pay the rent
and
children
are wearing
grandparent
hand-me-downs
to school
while carrying
church sponsored lunches
just so they’ll have
something
to eat
and
you fools
are telling me
that a vote
for your candidate
will bring back
the good-old-days
when
the hell
was
that

godot’s bus stop…

godot's bus stop

aunt bea
sat on the front porch
staring out into the night
watching as youths
made their way
into the city
there were tears
welling up
in her eyes
i asked
if she was alright
she said
for so many years
i worked just
to survive
raise my children
with honor
and
pride
i cleaned houses
washed
and
ironed laundry
i could never afford
for myself
and
prayed
that someday
these streets
would be safe
for
anyone to walk down
no gangs
no police
no
neighborhood watch robbery barons
just
someplace safe
i’m still
praying
but
i
survived

just messing with you…

just messing with you

a verizon service truck
pulled away from aunt bea’s
just as I drove up
i asked if she’d
had phone difficulties
she said
no
i had one of those
business lines installed
with
an automatic phone dialer
it randomly calls either
the irs
or
iran
when it calls
the irs
it asks when
the next dance lesson
is going to be held
and
when it calls iran
it just selects
some random number
says
as-salam
then
hangs up
i just want to see
if the nsc
is doing their
ss
kgb
secret police thing
maybe
they’ll send
one of those
handsome
fbi
or
partying cia agents
around
to
ask me
personal
questions

i’ve figured out
why people
don’t believe in
global warming
it’s got
the wrong
name
people see
and
hear about
ice floes into homes
superstorms
around the world
these hot
and cold
flashes of weather
make people say
you call that
global warming
we need a name
that matches the symptoms
the earth is experiencing
a term that conveys
the extremes
of the earth’s moods
and
the difficult times
ahead for
mankind
i’m recommending
global menopause
there’s a term
even a politician
will be able
to comprehend
