… Chalice

Dear Earth,Β you areΒ a sacred aqueous Isle
in a dark and endless sea of universe.
You may never reveal your strategy.
We may be Β bound Β by Β genetic code
to the presupposing chemical destiny
of one great astrophysical master plan
for all living things.Β We, who represent
your malaise, Β your chronic infestation;
we, Β like a fleeting itch in your long life,
will neverΒ comprehend it. Β But, in truth
you know too well Β that Β we can never
understandΒ more Β than one percent
of all there is to know. You contain
the knowledge that is beyond us.
We are like a rash on your skin.

One day, we know you will
raze all ofΒ our delusions,
prepare us for the day
when a blinding light
will Β inoculate Β you
and inform us Β of
a moment when
extant humans
will, at last be
prepared to
distinguish
the Β l i e s
f r o m
truth
and

if so
are
w e
m e r e
a t o m i c
p a r t i c l e s
inside aΒ temporal chalice?

[ The chalice comes in many iconic forms, none more so than the Holy Chalice, or Holy Grail, said to have been used to dispense its sacredΒ content at the Last Supper. Whether the above title prompts thisΒ as your first thoughtΒ orΒ whether it is the ‘poisoned’ variety, it is forΒ you to decide how you interpret itsΒ meaning. You can then preface the title, ‘Chalice’, withΒ the missing word. Β It has to be said that the above shapeΒ representsΒ a chalice with proportions that are rather slimΒ compared toΒ the traditionally chubbyΒ looking vessel, which better defines the name. Perhaps this is a good thing, making it as easier to read, likeΒ the narrow columns of a newspaper, perhaps ..?Β ]

Author:

β€œLife is short and art long, the crisis fleeting, experience penniless and decision difficult” ~ Hippocrates. As a young man, John was sporting and fit. It was then as much his recreational therapy as a cappella harmony singing, music, walking in the hills and writing is now. Playing Rugby Union for over twenty years, encouraged in the early days by a school that was run on the same lines and ethos as that famous Scottish public school, Gordonstoun, where our own headmaster had been as a senior master. This gave shape and discipline to a sometimes precarious early life. His fitness was enhanced not only by playing rugby, but also by working part time jobs in farming, as a leather factory packer and security guard, but probably not helped, for a short time, selling ice cream! His professional working life was spent as a Metallurgical Engineer, Marketing Manager, Export Sales Manager, Implementation Manager and Managing Director of his own company. Thirty five years spent, apparently in a creative desert, raising a family, pursuing a career and helping to pay the bills, probably enriched his experience, because his renaissance, on retirement, realised a hidden creative talent as a writer of prose and poetry. He also enjoys music, with a piano and a fifty-two year old Yamaha FG140 acoustic guitar. He sings bass in three a cappella harmony groups: as a founding member of a mixed voice chamber choir, Fox Valley Voices and barbershop quartets. He is also a member of one of the top barbershop choruses in the UK, Hallmark of Harmony (stage name of the Sheffield Barbershop Harmony Club), who, for the eighth time in 41 years, became UK Champions in 2019. He is also a would be (once upon a time or 'has been') photographer with drawers full of his own history, and an occasional, but lapsed 'film' maker. In his other life, he doubles as a Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, Cousin, Friend and Family man. What he writes is sometimes autobiographical, often political, sometimes dark and frequently pins his colours to the mast of climate change and how a few humans are trashing the Earth. In 2013, he published an anthology of the poetry (including his own) of an international group of poets, who met on Twitter in 2011. He produced, edited and steered the product of this work, "Petrichor Rising", to publication by Aquillrelle. His sort of strap-line reads: β€œ iWrite iSing iDance iChi iVolunteer ”

  1. Lovely! And the chailice is often used as a metaphor for the womb as in Riane Eisler’s historical exploration, “The Chalice and the Blade,” in which she presents her thesis that warfare and the war of the sexes are not biolgically ordained or even divinely ordained.

I appreciate the meditative honesty of this piece. Sometimes we have to face the truth about our place – and Earth’s place – in the natural course of things. Well done and so impressed with the shape of it. What patience! πŸ™‚ Bravo, John! Masterful.

    1. Thank you, Jamie. Must say I didn’t know about the metaphorical womb! Interesting thesis about warfare; would that it were true. Trouble is, I think that testosterone’s influence on competitive aggressive behaviour is biologically ordained 😦

  2. Reblogged this on My Poetry Library and commented:

Haven’t put much out there lately, not that I haven’t been writing, just that I’m becoming more critical of my own work. This is the result of some more serious thought on a subject that is at the roots of my philosophical outlook and observations of human behaviour … and a bit of fun really.
